Program areas at APHRC

The Research and related capacity strengthening (rrcs) program is working to increase the number of Research leaders in the region and improve institutional capacity for Research across academia through its flagship doctoral training program: the consortium for advanced Research training in africa (carta). Achievements include:in 2022, 14 carta fellows graduated with doctoral degrees, bringing the total number of graduates to 141 out of 245 fellows supported so far. Until 2022, the fellows had published 2,403 papers in peer-reviewed journals, helping to ensure that African Research reaches a global audience. In addition to the grants they receive from carta, the fellows secured external grants worth $6.3m, bringing the total grants raised by them to $29m. This could be partly attributed to the grant writing skillls they receive from carta. Aphrc conducted short-course training workshops for a broader audience of academic, advocacy & other research-interested institutions. They include courses on grant proposal writing, scientific writing and publishing, Research methodology, implementation Research, etc.
Data, measurement, and evaluation (dme) unit:the unit provides data quality control and data quality assurance, statistical and econometric analysis monitoring & evaluation, and economic valuation (cost-effectiveness analysis & cost-benefit analysis) of interventions and Research studies in African countries. Some achievements include:aphrc conducted an implementation review of the kenya national adolescent sexual & reproductive Health (asrh) policy 2015. Evidence generated from this evaluation has served to develop the new adolescents and young people reproductive (ayprh) policy. Aphrc was a panel member in the deep learning indaba conference, tunisia, 2022, panel member on the launch of i-dair gdm tool for mental Health Research in africa, oct 2022, member of the global data sharing reference group - held virtually in new york, august 2022, participant at the activity priority setting for year 2022 for kenya, directorate of Health policy, Research, monitoring & evaluation moh kenya, feb 2022, discussant at the national digital architectural Health enterprise with ministry of Health in kenya.
Population dynamics & sexual and reproductive Health & rights unit: the Population dynamics and sexual & reproductive Health & rights unit focuses on identifying the barriers to and solutions for improving access to sexual and reproductive Health information & services for all. The unit also actively engages with policy-makers and program implementers to facilitate the translation of its evidence to policy and programmatic action. Some achievements include:in partnership with the west africa civil society forum (wacsof), the program was able to implement capacity building for civil society organizations (csos), media, youth ecowas members and other governing bodies in sexual and reproductive Health and rights (srhr) Research, advocacy, communications & policy engagement. Engaging ecowas governing bodies on legislation & policy advisory on adolescent sexual & reproductive Health and rights, eradication of unsafe abortion among women and girls, and economic empowerment of the ecowas Population as well as the ecowas roadmap of ending child marriage, maputo protocol and the African charter on the rights and welfare of children.
