Program areas at Signature Theatre Company
Productions:signature Theatre's 2021-22 season marked an exciting transition as we returned to in-person programming at the center and brought back mainstage productions featuring a diverse and dynamic group of celebrated writers. The season welcomed audiences back to the center with the watering hole, an immersive arts installation by two-time pulitzer prize-winning playwright, lynn nottage, as the final installment of her spotlight residency. Macarthur and pulitzer prize-winning playwright anna deavere smith reworked her seminal piece twilight: los angeles, 1992 for an ensemble cast as the second work in her three-play spotlight residency. Macarthur award-winner dominique morisseau continued her premiere residency with her new play confederates. Finally, macarthur award-winner samuel d. hunter kicked off his premiere residency with the world premiere of his commissioned play a case for the existence of god. Signature continued to lead the field in arts accessibility by making our programming affordable to all through Signature access. A significant barrier to cultural participation is cost, and Signature access (formerly the ticket initiative) seeks to eliminate this obstacle. During Signature's 2021-22 season, tickets to the first five weeks of each season production were subsidized to $35 through Signature access. We provided 25,656 subsidized tickets.
Education:in the 2021-22 season Signature produced one student matinee and two student nights, built and launched our fellowship program with one artistic fellow from january-august, began a partnership with laguardia community college, and conducted research and development for expanded education programs, which launched in the 2022-23 season.
Sig space:in 2020, Signature launched a new initiative, sigspace, to bring artistic programming to the center's public spaces and sustain Signature's lobby as a free public workspace and social hub for new york artists. Sigspace programming includes concerts, readings of new work, comedy, storytelling, panels and social justice conversations, all in partnership with our resident writers and community organizations. In spring 2022, Signature hosted four live sigspace events and one virtual event with resident playwrights quiara alegria hudes, samuel d. hunter, and david henry hwang.
