Program areas at White House Historical Association
Sales of books, the official White House ornament and other items help to educate the public about the White House and preserve the history of the White House.
Publishing: the White House Historical Association produces award-winning books and magazines on a wide range of subjects related to the history of the president's House, from its architecture, gardens, fine and decorative arts to the presidents and first ladies who have lived there over the years. Significant new publications for the fiscal year ending september 30, 2022 were: the White House: an historic guide, the White House family cookbook, the official White House christmas ornament: collected stories of a holiday tradition, the White House in gingerbread: memories & recipes, and kids play at the White House. White House history quarterly issues included "waysides," queen elizabeth ii: the royal visits," "every president has walked these grounds,"the first ladies: fifty years of fashion and style." The Association's book received 27 national and international awards in the following competitions: american best book, benjamin franklin, communicator, eric hoffer, independent publisher, new york city big book, next generation indie book, and north Texas book festival.
Education, conferences and seminars and other programs: the White House Historical Association has several programs to educate the general-public. In partnership with the national trust for historic preservation, the Association hosted a symposium on historic preservation and the american presidency. The rubenstein center continues to host White House history live, a monthly virtual program. In june 2022, the program reached 1 million views online. The slavery in the president's neighborhood research initiative was launched in february 2020. It includes a landing page on the Association's website featuring an interactive timeline, an index of identified enslaved people who worked at the White House, a virtual tour of the decatur House slave quarters, and new scholarship on the enslaved african americans who built and maintained the White House. In july 2022, the Association hosted its annual White House history teacher institute to help promote and provide teachers with information and lesson plans regarding White House history. The virtual institute was a success, drawing 195 total registrants from across the county.to date, over 30,000 students have been engaged. The rubenstein center historians provided robust content for the associations website and social media platforms and answered queries from the press and the general public. The historians gave interviews to sirius xm's potus, the associated press, the Washington post, the new york times, npr, usa today, cnn, fox family and friends, and other media outlets.
