Shelter services - in 2022, the Brandywine Valley Spca cared for 17,497 animals with no-kill save rate of 95%. That's 48 animals per day coming through their doors seeking safety, love, and hope. Nearly half of those animals are lost pets hoping to find their way home and abandoned dogs and cats that would have nowhere else to go without the bvspca. Others are pets in need of rehoming, cats and dogs at risk of euthanasia in overcrowded shelters, and victims of cruelty and neglect. These animals come into the bvspca's four shelters from local work as the only open access shelter in the state of Delaware and in Pennsylvania's chester and Delaware counties, while being a national leader with our mentoring program in an effort to support shelters in struggling communities.
Animal health centers - the bvspca believes strongly in the human/animal bond and runs several programs that help make pet care more accessible and reduce the chance that a loved pet ends up in a shelter simply for financial reasons. In 2022, the four bvspca animal health centers performed 23,567 spay/neuter surgeries and 15,728 pet wellness visits. Thats 6% overall increase in surgeries compared to 2021 and a 12% increase in Delaware. In addition, 3,097 family pets received free vaccinations through the annual drive-through clinic event. With the opening of its new copeland center for animal welfare, the organization established Delaware's first shelter intensive care unit, doubled the spay/neuter capacity, and doubled the clinc space for veterinary care of family pets.
