The PENFaulkner Foundation celebrates literature and fosters connections between readers and writers to enrich and inspire individuals and communities. Its Writers in Schools program brings writers into public and public charter schools in Washington, DC to develop the next generation of readers and writers. The foundation also honors contemporary authors through awards and literary conversations held throughout DC to encourage diverse audiences.

Program areas at PENFaulkner Foundation

Writers in schools, a literary outreach program, is committed to developing the next generation of readers and writers. The program brings writers into the public and public charter schools of Washington, d.c. grades 3-12. We give the students copies of the books for them to read and discuss with the authors. We conducted over 225 author visits, coordinated several book clubs for students. To facilitate literary discussions and prepare for the author's visit, we provide curriculum materials to the teachers.
Awards and literary conversations introduces authors to new audiences and honors the best american fiction and short stories by contemporary authors. Literary conversations are held throughout dc in various venues to encourage diverse audiences. The pen/faulknePenfaulknerer award for fiction is a national prize for published works by american writers. The award is unique among literary honors since it is juried by other authors. The pen/malamud award honors an american writer of short stories.
