Using revenue sources to find membership, grant-based, and other types of organizations
In this help article...How organizations earn their revenue reveals much about their missions, how they are structured, and the types of activities they do. Cause IQ has over 20 filters on different sources of revenue you can use to find organizations in specific market segments.
Important to note is that Cause IQ has three different metrics for each revenue field, that allow for more specific types of searches:
Here are some common types of organizations and how to use revenue sources to find them:
Organizations must report types of revenues they receive from their members, both normal membership dues and fees their members pay for added benefits. By searching for organizations with membership revenues above an amount (e.g., $1,000,000), or with percentage of total revenues from membership above a threshold (e.g., 40%), you can identify membership-based organizations.
You can access these membership revenues in the All member fees, dues, etc.filter in the "Revenue: General" section of the "All filters" module. We recommend using the "Value" or "Percent of revenue" metrics when searching this filter. You can also use a Characteristics - Membership filter to segment organizations with memberships.
Organizations that receive the majority of their revenues from general public support -- donations, contributions, grants from foundations, etc. -- are easily identified in Cause IQ. You can access these public-derived revenues with the Total grants, contributions, etc. filter in the "Revenue: General" section. of the "All filters" module. We recommend using the "Percent of revenues" metric when searching this filter.
Many nonprofit organizations sell services or products to fund their operations. This is particularly true for trade associations, hospitals, schools, and government contractors. Revenue from these sources is called program service revenue. In Cause IQ you can search for the total amount of program service revenue or for specific types of program service revenue.
You can access the Program services revenue filter in the "Revenue: General" section of the "All filters" module. We recommend using the "Value" or "Percent of revenues" metrics when searching this filter. You can use the Program service, keywords filter, also within the "Revenue: General" section, to search for organizations with specific types of program service revenues using keywords or phrases(e.g., "tuition, fees").
Nonprofits throw fundraising events -- from golf tournaments to gala balls -- to help fund their work. With Cause IQ you can identify organizations that throw these events, as well as understand the characteristics of these events. Similar to program service revenue, you can search by the total amount raised from fundraising events, and also the characteristics of the individual events.
You can access the All income from fundraising events filter in the "Revenue: Fundraising events, gaming, etc." section of the "All filters" module. We recommend using the "Value" or "Percent of revenues" metrics when searching this filter. You can also use the Fundraising event details filter, also in the "Revenue: Fundraising events, gaming, etc." section, to search for organizations with types of fundraising events that match certain keywords (e.g., "ball, run").
