Nutrition program: dscc's and ksc's nutrition programs include both home delivered meals ("meals on wheels") and community dining. Home delivered meals ("meals on wheels") are packed and delivered each weekday to frail and homebound seniors. In addition to a meal, community dining sites provide opportunities for elderly persons to socialize and participate in activities. All meals served are balanced, nutritious, and meet special dietary needs required, such as lowsalt, vegetarian, or diabetic. Each meal is equivalent to 1/3 of the reference dietary intake for adults 60 and over. Dscc also provides health and wellness education on topics pertinent to elderly lifestyles. Last year, dscc served approximately 7,085 seniors through 507,725 meals. Federal and state grants consist of older americans act (received through the ageguide northeastern Illinois) and emergency food & shelter program (received through the united way).
Well-being program: dscc & ksc volunteers and staff conduct a daily well-being check with each meal delivery and each on-site home maintenance service, including noting changes in a Senior's physical or mental health. Dscc & ksc collaborate with every municipality and township in Dupage county to account for every "missing" Senior (Senior not home when he/she was expected to be) by the end of the day. Dscc's & ksc's well being checks have been credited with saving the lives of numerous elderly persons. Last year, dscc & ksc performed 304,850 well-being checks. Services provided to our seniors include: meals on wheels, community dining, health & wellness education, well-being checks, pet care & food assistance, minor home repairs, contractor referrals, yard clean-ups, friendly phone calls/visits & assistance, and inter-generational activities.
Home maintenance program: dscc's home maintenance program provides low-cost minor home repairs to seniors. In cases where homes requirelarger repair services, dscc offers assessments and provides contractor referrals. In the yard services component of the home maintenance program, groups of volunteers help seniors with various outside chores and yard tasks. The friendly visit component of the home maintenance program provides seniors with assistance with basic home tasks associated with daily living. Last year, dscc provided 350 home and yard services along with 20,560 hours of friendly phone calls.
