Program areas at EWI

Midwest operationsin Edison Welding Institute's ("ewi") fiscal year ending june 30, 2022, ewi had over 600 individual projects, averaging $36,000 per project, and up to $1,800,000. Each project has vast degrees of technology deployed and advanced joining processes. See below for each area that ewi served.space - ewi leads the way in developing and deploying advances in manufacturing for the space industry to reduce weight and cost, improve first-time quality, and speed up the development cycle compared to legacy manufacturing methods.rail - improve the safety, fabrication, operation, maintenance, and repair of rails and equipment.packaging - ewi's expertise in materials engineering, product design, and advanced joining technologies for manufacturing helps companies to cut waste, cut costs, and optimize production when developing packaging solutions.medical - use materials engineering and joining technologies to cut waste, cut costs, and optimize production for package solutions.heavy manufacturing - improve performance, safety, quality, and operational efficiency through manufacturing technology innovation.consumer - accelerate product design and speed-to-market cycles through application of innovative materials, joining, and sealing technologies.auto - stay competitive with innovations in light weighting and dissimilar materials joining.air - increase production efficiencies, quality, and life-expectancy of joinery on aircrafts.advanced energy - reduce consumption, meet new energy regulations, and get to market faster.government - confidential client:ewi continues to support a wide range of government agency initiatives where manufacturing innovation is a key enabler to success. Ewi's expertise has enabled the development of novel material joining techniques to optimize and add flexibility to manufacturing processes, the implementation of novel monitoring techniques to improve component capabilities in metal additive manufacturing, and the generation of a roadmap of the most critical joining and forming challenges facing today's manufacturers. Ewi continues to be recognized as the thought leader when government agencies require manufacturing innovation expertise.confidential client: ewi continues to work with a jet engine company on various methods of repairing jet engine components and assisting them in new part production. Ewi continued to work with this client on new ways to solve complex joining and manufacturing problems. Ewi does not manufacture any parts for on-wing applications.joint sponsored projects:ewi leads a consortium of us industry and academic materials joiningand forming organizations, developing the first comprehensive us"advanced joining and forming technology roadmap." This roadmapidentifies and ranks challenges in order to prioritize research anddevelopment that provides competitive advantages with substantivenational impact. Ewi guides a steering committee that unitesstakeholders from industry, academia, professional societies, nonprofit research centers, technology providers, and regional economicdevelopment authorities around a common vision to develop innovativetechnology solutions to the nation's most important joining and formingchallenges. Under the u.s. department of commerce, ewi has been fundedto develop advanced eddy current techniques for characterization ofadditively manufactured (am) materials - feedstock and solid amcomponents before, during, and after fabrication. Ewi has directed ateam of the most advanced engineering universities and innovativemanufacturers in a collaborative effort for "in-situ processmonitoring" for am fabrication that addresses high priority focusareas. The ewi team has addressed detailed, critical measurementscience challenges, and identified and applied specific solutions formetal-based am.training:for whatever technology need or challenge, ewi provides trainingtailored to fit. Ewi offers courses that provide engineers andtechnicians with an overview of the various aspects of weldingtechnology. These courses are organized into modules discussing weldingprocesses, Welding metallurgy and weldability, Welding design andtesting (including mechanical testing and ndt), and qualifications andprocedure review. These courses provide an excellent mix of classroomand laboratory training with the lab portion enhanced by ewi'sworld-class Welding facility. The courses are particularly useful forengineers who were not originally educated as Welding engineers.
