Program areas at EJI

Eji provided direct legal services to hundreds of people in 2022 who were wrongly convicted, unfairly sentenced or illegally prosecuted. We won several rulings that advanced the rule of law and protected vulnerable people from unjust treatment. We litigated in state and federal courts across the country and also provided aid to dozens of formerly incarcerated people who we helped win freedom through re-entry services and support.
We welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors to our museum and memorial and opened new spaces to accomodate groups visiting the sites for reflection discourse on american history and the legacy of slavery. The legacy plaza and legacy hall both opened in 2022 and allowed us to host major convenings for educators and healthcare providers. We continued our community remembrance project and provided thousands of dollars in scholarships to high school students and erected new historical markers in several states. We also published a new report on the transatlantic slave trade that has been widely disseminated along with our educational materials and calendar which has been viewed by thousands.
