Program areas at Goodwin Living Foundation

Goodwin Living fellowship (resident financial assistance) program (see schedule o. )Goodwin Living Foundation supports the Goodwin Living resident support program (formerly called fellowship), which provides confidential financial assistance to residents who have outlived their financial resources. The resident support program covers the monthly fees of those residents who have outlived their resources, through no fault of their own. These fees cover housing, meals, medical care, and the various programming offered through Goodwin House alexandria and Goodwin House bailey's crossroads. The resident support program also covers financial needs for those residents who can pay their monthly fees, but who cannot afford unexpected certain expenses such as a dental surgery or a vision-saving eye surgery. The resident support program is at the heart of the mission of Goodwin Living and enables older adults in need of financial support to live with the peace of mind that their housing, service, and care needs will always be met. This peace of mind extends to the family members of our resident recipients as well. In fiscal year (fy) 2022, the Foundation granted $461,913 to Goodwin Living incorporated to provide for resident support recipients. Goodwin Living Foundation provided 100% of the resident support program expenses for fy 2022. The Foundation raised $559,546 (including a bequest of $145,184) for the resident support program from gifts received in fy 2022, resulting in a surplus of $77,603 that was restricted for this use in future years.
Goodwin Living staff support (see schedule o).the Foundation worked diligently to partner with its donors to support our team members as well. Through an incredible outpouring of generosity, we were able to provide $470,357 in funding for team members and their families. We also partnered with a local community college to increase the number of nursing students available in our employment. Some of that support came in tuition assistance grants and leadership opportunities ($201,661) funded 84 students in their educational journeys. Also, we were able to support again a cohort of team members for the advanced certified nursing assistance career leadership training and advanced certification. New this year was the additional funding granted for children of our team members to receive support for their higher education. 47 children of team members received grants of $1,000 each to ease the burden of educational costs for a total of $47,000. This benefit was received extremely well in our community because many of our team members have completed their formal education yet have a strong desire to support their children through college. Other contributions were used to provide for the u.s. Citizenship application fee program supporting 17 of our staff members and 8 of their family members, totaling $20,423. This also provided course materials for our resident tutors who help our team members prepare for their naturalization test and interview. We believe this is an important program given that one in four of our staff members are foreign born and many wish to pursure u.s. Citizenship, but are hindered by the high costs in fees. Many members of our team continued to experience severe financial difficulties due to the pandemic. We were able to offer some hope by offering approximately $40,000 in food assistance for our staff as well as provide for emergency assistance grants totaling $105,074. These grants helped to support team members with overdue medical bills, unexpected car repairs, and assistance with rent under dire circumstances. This assistance provided comfort to those in need and allowed them to continue serving alongside our residents with dignity and their exceptional standards of professionalism and compassion. Through the anderson fund, the Foundation was able to provide over $20,000 in student loan repayment for several team members and also to introduce high school and college interns to Goodwin Living. These interns had valuable experiences that provided them the opportunity to witness the strong culture of welcome and community at our organization and also to learn about the field of senior Living. After completion of the internship program, where they were paired with resident mentors, many said they wanted to pursue a career in senior Living, and some wanted to seek employment with Goodwin Living when they finished school!when we welcomed the view alexendria (formerly the hermitage) into the Goodwin Living familty, the Foundation received $272,610 in restricted funds for the view alexandria, with the majority of funds designated for resident support there.
Goodwin Living resident engagement (see schedule o). Through the generosity of residents, family members, staff, friends, and organizations who wished to partner with our mission, the Foundation was able to provide additional support to our community in a myriad of ways.in order to enhance resident engagement, we provided $312,870 for resident programming. This included areas such as enhancing life enrichment, and supporting various therapies. We were able to fund the salaries and benefits of two full time music therapists. We provided for horticultural therapy through a program called eldergrow. We also were able to provide for the operating budget and the salaries/benefits for the brain health department team (3 full time employees). With increased staffing for brain health, we were able to offer the strongermemory curriculum complimentary to thousands of individuals within and outside of our community to those experiencing cognitive decline. The chapels on each campus also were supported through this generosity. Furthermore, the grounds were enhanced with additional plantings, a water feature, and a soothing plant wall that was installed.the Foundation received $30,787 in gifts to the hospice fund and utilized $21,379 to provide much needed support for many of the patients in our hospice care as well as professional development for the team members. The team was able to provide therapies and equipment to enhance comfort for their patients when needed. The remaining surplus is restricted for use in future years.
