Program areas at Harnett County Partnership for Children

NC Pre-Kindergarten (NC Pre-K) is a program to reach at risk four-year old children to give them a chance to grow socially and educationally before entering kindergarten. The program is designed to help prepare the children for kindergarten through a curriculum-based, classroom style learning environment. Over 360 pre-kindergarten children were served during the year in 5 private child care centers and 6 public schools in 23 different classrooms.
Ready to Grow facilitates developmentally appropriate play groups for children and caregivers who reside in Harnett County. Eligible children must be between the ages of birth to 5 and not enrolled in a full time regulated child care facility. Priority will be given to children who demonstrate delays in one or more developmental domains. Playgroups will meet weekly for 40 weeks and a minimum of 90 minutes. Playgroups are offered in various accessible locations throughout Harnett County. Playgroup facilitators use the Kaleidoscope Curriculum to provide hands on activities that focus on early literacy and social and emotional competency. Caregivers learn about the purpose of play and will connect with other parents during group time. 344 unduplicated children participated in playgroup.
STEP is a quality enhancement program in which early childhood program specialists work one-on-one with child care centers and child care homes to increase their star rated license through: Support - Leadership support and training; Technical Assistance - Guidance to increase or maintain Star Rated Licensure; Evaluation Tool - Action plans and grants for classroom improvement; Professional Development - Education plans and tuition reimbursement. 140 early childhood educators were trained. Staff worked with 18 child care providers who enrolled for college credit courses. 27 licensed facilities worked with the STEP program.
