Description
METC is a history museum that tells the story of how people lived and worked in the 18th and 19th centuries. Since 1969, the Museum has been dedicated to educating young people about this aspect of New Jersey history. Through interactive programs, scouts are able to take part in a lesson and make a craft to take home with them. Our mission is to foster the understanding, cultivation, and appreciation of America’s past by presenting and interpreting the history, culture, and lives of the inhabitants of New Jersey from its earliest settlement through the present day.

Program areas at METC

The main activity of the Museum is to develop and deliver curriculum-based, educational programs to students throughout the state of new jersey and to provide additional programs, lectures, and workshops for a wide range of visitors. All educational programs are mission based, interactive and intended to provide free-choice learning to all visitors. Our educational programs and exhibits support the themes and narratives that relate to our collection of artifacts, archives, and material culture. Each year we create and install changing exhibits in our main gallery and annex. In 2022 they were: on the map: historic maps of new jersey; hope: local artists banner show; fighting fire: first responders in new jersey; picturing women inventors. Smaller exhibits in our vault space included frozen music: architecture; native american heritage month; immigrants to influencers: the latin american history of new jersey. The Museum also maintains two levels of permanent exhibits that reflect life in new jersey from the Early 1700s through the industrial era and represent the diversity of the state of new jersey .
