Program areas at National Lieutenant Governors Association

NLGA conducts an Annual Meeting, usually hosted by a member, as an opportunity to showcase unique state-by-state resources, best practices, shared solutions, and common experiences with a goal to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of government. The meeting averages an economic impact of more than $400,000 for the state which hosts it (2012). At this meeting, two second-in-commands are recognized with an award for (1) leadership in the arts and (2) leadership in recycling. NLGA Members passed bipartisan policy statements of shared concern.
NLGA conducts an annual federal-state relations meeting in Washington, DC as an opportunity to exchange information on issues and to create, maintain, and expand state-to-state, federal, and international relationships contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of state and territorial government and the office of lieutenant governor and second-in-command. This meeting uniquely offers members opportunities internationally, particularly as related to commerce. The focus of this meeting is international and intergovernmental affairs. At this meeting, two seconds-in-command are recognized for leadership in (1) energy and sustainability and (2) public health.
NLGA conducts an annual Business Meeting for new elects/appointees, usually hosted by a member, as an opportunity to showcase unique state-to-state resources, best practices, shared solutions, and common experiences with a goal to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of state and territorial government and the office of second-in-command. This meeting also focuses on leadership training and the unique training for the office of lieutenant governor and of succession.
NLGA also maintains and adds to a database of information on seconds-in-command at www.nlga.us. NLGA conducts virtual meetings and trainings. NLGA produces an issue e-newsletter monthly, and maintains active, daily social media to the mission. NLGA answers inquiries from and collaborates with legislative staff, reporters, academics, researchers, and more. NLGA serves as a federal-state intergovernmental affairs link. NLGA produces an annual Issues Guide collaboration with Partners for Members.
NLGA awards 12 STEM scholarships a year to schools.
