Program areas at NAYA
Community development - the community development program seeks to increase the economic success of the Native community in portland by providing a number of opportunities. Career skills and workforce programs allow participants to gain the skills and experience needed to be successful in the workforce. The housing program offers long-term housing stability assistance and short-term energy assistance. The homeownership program works to increase homeownership opportunities for portland's urban Native community and close the Native homeownership gap. (continued on schedule o)the naya Family Center supports and facilitates several programs related to Native economic well-being, including individual development accounts-matched savings ("ida"), financial wellness classes, a small business microenterprise class, tax assistance and continuing education.
Family services - the naya Family Center provides Family services to strengthen Family and community ties. Assistance and support is provided to victims of domestic and sexual violence, to Native children in foster care and their caregivers, and to Native elders.
Youth services - the naya Family Center provides advocacy and engagement through academic, cultural, and social opportunities to grade school, middle school, and high school students within the greater portland metropolitan area to help them reach their full potential. Rigorous learning opportunities throughout the year including summer camps, college to career counseling and advocacy, culturally specific programming, after school recreation, and the provision of individual advocacy and other support services are available to Youth. Additionally, programming includes gang prevention/outreach, homeless Youth and healthy kids as well as referral to external agencies for counseling services.
Naya early college academy - the naya early college academy nourishes a hands-on, culturally relevant, student-centered learning environment. The academy offers a blended high school and postsecondary curriculum for the 9th through 12th graders, aged 14 to 20. Students attending the academy have the unique opportunity to earn a high school diploma and also earn college credits. Small class sizes encourage individualized educational options for each student. Academic programming integrates local Native culture, Family and community outreach, and partnerships with portland community college and other postsecondary institutions. The academy currently serves the portland public, david douglas, and centennial school districts. Affordable housing - the naya Family Center is the single member of two limited liability companies providing low-income affordable housing. Sawash housing, llc operates three properties, and provides 44 units of low-income affordable housing. Kah san chako haws, llc operates one property, and provides 9 units of low-income affordable housing. In addition, the naya Family Center through its wholly-owned subsidiary, naya generations, llc, is the sponsor of naya generations affordable housing, a 40-unit low-income housing which opened in february 2017.fiscal sponsorship- the naya Family Center serves as a fiscal sponsor for the national urban indian Family coalition, and for the Native voice network.housing and stabilization services: the housing and stabilization services department provides homelessness prevention rent assistance, homeless system navigation, housing placement, housing retention and energy assistance services. The department also provides resident services at two of naya's cully properties, helping to build community and assist residents when additional support or resources are needed. All services are geared towards helping indigenous households move forward with housing, income and any additional goals they set for themselves.
