Program areas at North Carolina Housing Coalition

In 2022 and 2021, the Coalition was awarded comprehensive Housing counseling program (chc) funds through the department of Housing and urban development (hud), office of Housing counseling. In 2021, the Coalition was also awarded Housing stability counseling program (hscp) funds through neighborworks america. These programs provide counseling and advice to tenants and homeowners. The Coalition contracts with hud-approved Housing counseling agencies to provide a wide variety of Housing counseling services to homebuyers, homeowners, renters, and the homeless. Through a subrecipient agreement with the nc office of recovery and resiliency (ncorr) executed in 2022, the homeownership assistance program provides down payment and closing cost assistance to first time and first-generation homebuyers for the purchase of their home, to be used as the primary residence, within 16 counties most impacted and distressed by hurricanes matthew and florence. Through a subrecipient agreement with ncorr executed in 2021, the Coalition is responsible for coordinating Housing counseling services to ncorr buyout program participants.
In 2021, the Coalition was awarded a subgrant from the nc dhhs, division of public health for developing a Housing landscape analysis and working on Housing policy recommendations for individuals coming out of incarceration settings and with substance abuse issues. The Coalition was awarded a continuation for the program in 2022.
The Coalition provides general advocacy, education and public policy development to increase access to affordable Housing for low-income North carolinians. The Coalition is also part of the national "energy efficiency for all" campaign that focuses on energy efficiency for low-income renters and the "opportunity starts at home" that seeks to broaden the support for Housing among other sectors. The Coalition is also engaged with and supports local individuals and organizations engaged in tenant organizing.
The Coalition co-hosts and facilitates the nc annual Housing conference which brings together developers, lenders, advocacy organizations, service providers, Housing counselors and many others to discuss best practices and the impact affordable Housing has on our families, communities, and economy. The Coalition also co-hosts the bringing it home conference, an annual conference for homeless service providers.
