Program areas at Nuvista Light and Electric Cooperative

Regional Energy Plan/USDA - A major program in 2022 included development of a wind project in the YK Delta. The project will involve installing wind generation and energy storage in Kwethluk, Alaska. The intent of the project is to decrease energy costs for the community, decrease dependence on fossil fuels, increase resilience, and off-set diesel consumption.
BIA - This program is supplementary to the Regional Energy Plan and USDA programs. The BIA program covers business development and capacity development in Kwethluk to ensure the community is prepared to take on the wind and battery project when it is commissioned. Nuvista and sub-contractors worked with Kwethluk Incorporated on a power purchase agreement, clean energy business plan, and operations and maintenance planning.
Doe - Nuvista launched a grant-funded effort to bolster the wind project in kwethluk by purchasing a battery energy storage system that will be installed in the power plant. The purpose of the battery is to improve the economics of the kwethluk wind project, provide improved energy resilience in the event of power outages, and reduce consumption of fossil fuels.
