Program areas at Press On South
Level up is an education program that works to equip journalists and community media makers with the analysis, skills, and tools they need to transform the field of journalism and expand the practice of southern movement journalism. In 2022, level up hosted 5 public workshops that reached 227 participants and encouraged them to deepen their movement journalism practices.
The southern movement media fund provides individual and collective grants to southern media makers and journalists who practice movement journalism, providing them support to work alongside their communities, with each other, and movement partners to produce the news and information people need to make informed decisions about their lives. In 2022, the southern movement media fund funded 8 grantees(4 organizations and 4 individuals) to support their work in creating community based movement journalism projects rooted in the South.
The freedomways reporting residency is a program for journalists and storytellers in the us South whose work serves to advance justice. In an effort to strengthen journalism driven by people who are building power within marginalized and oppressed communities, the program prioritizes women of color and lgbtq+ people of color as participants. In 2022, freedomways stewarded a cohort of 5 emerging journalist leaders.
The movement building program works to create networks among organizers and journalists to uplift community members' work and to further social justice through narrative. In 2022, this work included hosting a movement journalism listserv that reached 275 participants and encouraged them to share resources, uplift each other's work and build community. The communications program works to amplify the long history of southern storytelling and to share opportunities to participate in Press on.
