Program areas at Retreat Farm
Community services - Retreat Farm comprises a vast, free, and accessible public common that served over 70,000 people in 2022. Retreat Farm hosted community gatherings, outdoor concerts, ballet performances, art installations, and private events in collaboration with local nonprofits and community partners. The Farm also provided critical community services as the home of the brattleboro boys and girls club after-school program and served as fiscal sponsor to the atowi project.
Food & agriculture - with a $3m congressional award, we purchased the former grafton village cheese co. Facility to establish a regional food center to spotlight the regional food system and support producers focused on positively contributing to your local and global communities. We continued our partnership with miller Farm to support one of the largest organic dairies in Vermont with pastureland for their dry cows, making productive use of over 240 acres of agricultural land. We also supported food equity by serving as the fiscal sponsor of the community food project.
Restoration and conservation - with federal and state support, we secured funding to restore the historic north barn into a year-round space for community-advancing events and gatherings - boosting tourism, reducing isolation and loneliness, and strengthening social ties. We also installed elevated duckboards to provide access to our walking trails and protect wetland areas, recured funding to create a one-mile accessible section of trail, and collaborated with the atowi project on interpretive signage to highlight the cultural significance of the wantastegok trail.
