Program areas at Sacred Heart Center
Adult literacy: six direct programs were administered and offered to adults in three methodologies: in person, virtual, and hybrid formats. Classes were offered in english as a second language, ged preparation in spanish, citizenship, basic literacy, parenting classes, and conversational spanish. In fy 23, we had 726 adults that enrolled in our classes and received instruction at three campuses: our main campus, our satellite location in chesterfield county, and our virtual campus.
Community hub and meeting basic needs: this portfolio includes our wrap-around services, implemented through our family support program and our immigration legal services program. Many partnerships allowed for a variety of services to be provided to families that were disproportionately impacted by covid-19. In our ongoing response to the global pandemic, we provided food assistance, offered financial assistance toward housing costs and eviction prevention, and conducted outreach, education, and vaccine clinics to mitigate covid-19. These various partnerships and other diverse services offered by shc resulted in approximately 21,000 people being served in fy23.
Family resource programming: shc offered seven programs to 241 children and youth in fy 23. The family literacy program included a school readiness program for children 18 months to 4 years old, as well as a school enrichment program for children 4 to 12 years old. In addition, shc had programs for high school youth, including a college and career bound program, which encourages latino youth to finish high school and prepares them for post-secondary options, and famigos, a program for youth that have recently arrived in the us. Also offered is casa lapiz, an art program for middle school students, our summer camp, cielito lindo, as well as a traditional dance program, Sacred Heart folklorico.
