Program areas at SLAC
Since 1970, Salt Lake Acting Company has been producing "thoughtful, provocative theatre" in the beehive state. As a small professional theatre under contract with actor's equity association producing exclusively regional and world premieres that would not otherwise be seen in Utah, our programming brings vibrance to our region. The plays we present deepen conversations, elevate awareness, and entertain while holding a mirror to contemporary american life. We serve as a home for emerging and established theatre artists, providing mentorship, community, and employment to Utah's next generation of theatre professionals. With its onion-dome, our historic building is an unforgettable location in the heart of the marmalade district that lends character and spirit to our work. We give local artists a reason to stay in Utah, and build bridges with theatres across the country through the national new play network, an organization with whom we have been a core member since its founding in 1998. Nimble enough to take risks, and sizable enough to make a significant impact on our community, our unique voice lends legitimacy to slc's theatre scene on a national scale. In addition to our world, regional, and Utah premiere productions, we also provide a suite of new play development, arts education, and community programs: through our new play sounding series, playwrights are given a constructive, low risk arena for artists to navigate the challenges that come with writing and developing new plays. This program has provided professional resources for the artistic development of over 100 new plays. Our professional theatre program gives Utah's students and aspiring theatre artists the opportunity to work on a professional production. Through our title i arts education program, slac hosts over 2,000 low-income students for our professional children's production. Seeing our production on stage helps students see life's possibilities and ignites a passion for creativity and reading. Our understudy program expands our ability to hire and nourish emerging and established actors alike. With each production, understudies bring newfound flexibility to each team. Understudies are meaningfully integrated into the rehearsal process, guaranteed at least one performance, and offered the opportunity for production photos, which contribute to their ongoing professional development. Our accessibility programming is a cornerstone of everything we do and is embedded into our work. We offer audio described, asl interpreted, open-captioned, and sensory sensitivity performances. We aim to engage our community and audiences deeply through talkbacks, panel discussions, video content, discounted ticket programs, and partnerships with forward-thinking community organizations.
