Program areas at Terrain Programs
From Here - since moving to our larger location in 2019 our retail program has continued to grow now representing 114 participating artists. Our full-time manager has helped us to meet our goals for the shop and use the shop to further support artists. The shop has continued our ability to amplify local artists in our community and expose their work to a broader audience. In 2022, the shop far exceeded our goals for sales putting more money back into artists pockets.
We moved Terrain Gallery into a brand new location on N. Monroe, and celebrated our gallery reopening in May. Since then, we?ve hosted monthly gallery shows and we?re looking forward to another year (we?re booked until January of 2026!) of showcasing incredible art inside our beautiful and historic gallery building. We?ve worked hard to increase the diversity of artists we serve, and of the seven shows we?ve had since the gallery reopening, we?ve featured 23 local and traveling artists, five of which identify as BIPOC, seven of which identify as LGBTQ2SIA+, and 18 of which identify as womxn.
Additional Programs - We finished fundraising for the East Central Public Art Project and solidified the team, location, artists and date of installation of late summer 2023. Working in collaboration with Carl Maxey Center, Terrain will produce a unique, large-scale public art project focused on underserved communities in the East Sprague Neighborhood. This will not just be a mural but will also include a website, videos of 20 neighborhood leaders to be housed on our website. The mural itself will include an interactive element as well. The goal of the public art piece is to pay homage to the neighborhood by giving voice to them. In 2022 we debuted a new program, Terrain Talks, an informal (and FREE!) lecture series catered to artists who want to learn business tips from local professionals. Bazaar and BrrrZAAR, our one-day art markets, featured 147 arts-based businesses, accrued $361,000 in sales, and saw thousands of Spokanites eager to build relationships with local artists. After a 2 1/2 year hiatus due to the pandemic we brought back our flagship event, Terrain 13. It was bigger (354 artists showcased) than ever, transforming a new location, Jensen-Byrd (empty building in Downtown Spokane) into a three level, multimedia art and music experience. And perhaps most importantly, into a space that allows us to envision a Spokane that celebrates and amplifies all voices, and that understands the essential role art brings to our lives.
