Curating and curatorial research fy2023the Museum's curators research, care for, and exhibit collections including paintings, sculptures, decorative arts (furniture, glass, ceramics, and metalwork), works on paper, costume and textiles, and moving image Art, ranging in date from antiquity to contemporary and including works from most continents. The Wadsworth also lends collection objects to exhibitions around the world. In fy23 we released 67 objects, both Art and archival materials, from our collection to 24 borrowing institutions.we lend to a host of institutions within the united states and a few in europe, a few are noted below:detroit institute of artscrystal bridges Museum of american artsamerican folk Art museumyale center for british artart institute of chicagolos angeles county Museum of artgallerie d'italia - palazza scalathe national gallery, londonthrough purchases, gifts, and bequests the Wadsworth acquired works of Art including but not limited to works in the contemporary, european, and american collection areas.fy23 installation highlights: i am seen therefore, i am: isaac julien and frederick douglassjustine kurland: girl pictureslisa alvarado / matrix 192 / spinning echorelax! Other program expenses: other program expenses include marketing, public relations, membership, Museum shop, theater and other miscellaneous.
Education/visitor experience and services the learning and engagement department at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art provides learning and engagement opportunities for all audiences. Programs for families, prek-12 and college students, educators, and for the broader public activate our collections and special exhibitions and encourage visitor connections with Art's history and contemporary social relevance. The department works closely with curatorial, marketing, and development on interpretive projects, evaluation efforts for programs and exhibitions, and fundraising. Adult-centered programs take many shapes, including gallery talks, fy23 public programming highlights:the annual pennington lecture conceived as part of the black heritage project initiative led by capital community college featured noted author and dean of columbia university journalism school, william jelani cobb. This event was part of a series of related activities supported by the Wadsworth and the amistad center for Art & culture designed to bring the history of hartford's first black church and school for black children into public view. Second saturdays for families programs served more than 4,200 visitors in fy23, our highest attendance since the pandemic. The monthly free program encourages discovery through a layered program of art-making, tours for intergenerational audiences, music, and live performance. An especially successful martin luther king, jr. community day celebrated the legacy of dr. king through Art making, performances, and tours for all ages.
