Mission: to enhance environmental health education to assure the optimal health of people and the environment. Working to accomplish this mission by the promotion of environmental health science studies to a diversity of students through accredited environmental health science programs at universities across the us. Expanding the number of universities that offer accredited programs and increasing the number and diversity of students who graduate from these programs and enter public service. Student recruiting: through the enrollment dip in the 2010/2011 academic year aehap has worked with accredited national environ mental health science & protection accreditation council programs to grow enrollment for undergraduate and graduate programs. There were 29 undergraduate accredited programs and 9 graduate level accredited programs at 31 four year universities across the us through 2015. Undergraduate enrollment increased by 3.2% to 1.505 students beginning the 9/2015 school year after 347 students received their b.s. Degrees by june 2015. This followed a surge of 7.8% additional enrollment - 105 undergrad students in sept. 2014 for the 2014/2015 academic year. Graduating with a b.s. Degree from an accredited programs is a solid science preparation to start as a public health practitioner even so aehap saw strong growth in the graduate degree enrollment for the 2015/2016 academic year. In june 2014 99 students graduated from the 9 accredited graduate environmental health programs. Enrollment increased by 7.3% in sept. 2014 for the 2014/2015 year to 289 graduate students. In june 2015 there were 111 graduated from this level and in sept. 2015 graduate level enrollment increased by 176 students a 60.9% increase to 465 students enrolled in these same 9 programs. To show case students work aehap again sponsored the student research competition awarding $1,000 to each selected student and paying the students travel expenses to attend and present at the annual neha sponsored summer conference. Environmental health awareness: in 2015 aehap again worked with partner organization nsf to sponsor a student research project focused on the public health impacts of inspections and third party verifications of compliance with health requirements. The findings of this 8 to 10 week project are presented by the nsf student at the annual neha summer conference. The student receives a $3,500 award along with travel expenses to the conference and their faculty mentor is awarded $500 by nsf administered through aehap. Aehap has the goal of increasing the number of graduating students who go into the field as both public and private practitioners. In the class of 2015 at the undergraduate level there were 347 graduates. Of those 24% went to the private sector; 68% to public sector; 5% into education and 3% to non-profits. At the higher graduate level there were 111 graduates. Of those 44% went to private sector positions; 47% to public sector positions; 5% into education and 4% to non-profits. Increasing public awareness of the impact of environmental health is helping to bring in new students which in turn is increasing the number of graduates who enter the wide variety of positions that need to be filled in the broad area of environmental health science. There continues to be a large gap in public awareness of the broad range of environmental health science careers and the positive impact of not having public health impacting emergencies through prevention or quick source detection. Aehap is strengthening partnerships to increase awareness. Diversity enhancement: aehap has seen strongpositive results in overall diversity of students entering and graduating into the field of environmental health science by the 2015/2016 enrollment year diversity had increased by 103% from 10 years ago. This is achieved by a two-prong approach first in reaching out to potential students as they are making their college decisions and second by recruiting universities with strongly diverse student populations to become accredited. Our latest survey information verifies continual and steady growth in overall number of students and in the maintenance of solidly diverse undergraduate and gradute programs. Undergrad student diversity was 66% white; 11% hispanic; 10% black; 8% asian; 1% pacific islander; 1% native American and 3% other. At the graduate level student diversity was 43% white; 44% black; 5% hispanic; 1% pacific islander and 6% other. The success of focused school recruiting for accreditation is evident especially at the graduate level. The one area of diversity that is too low is the native American group. This will be a focus going forward with a more targeted approach to select a school that has a draw with this group and also has the environmental health science curriculum that could be developed into an accredited program. This is a longer term project that aehap has had as a goal but will focus on through partnering and mentoring.
