Use expenditure characteristics to determine the types of services that organizations are buying from vendors and other contractors
In this help article...Organizations spend billions of dollars procuring products and services from private sector vendors, including $25 billion on information technology and $4.5 billion on accounting services this past year. If you're selling to nonprofits and trying to identify which organizations procure which types of products or services, a good place to start is looking at their expenses.
As with all financial information on nonprofit organizations, the data Cause IQ has is only as good as the organizations that fill out their financial disclosures. Occasionally organizations do not fill out their statements correctly or mis-categorize line-item expenses.
If many of your clients spend, or have the potential to spend, more than $100,000 a year on your services, a good place to start is filtering by organizations that have current contractors on which they spend more than $100,000. You can access this information with the Num. $100k+ contractors filter in the "Expenses: Fee-for-service" section of the "All" filters tab.
Organizations spent over $4.5 billion on accounting services, including tax and audit, this past year. If you are an accounting firm, or partner closely with accounting firms, searching for organizations that spend money on accountants can be helpful. You can access this information with the Accounting fees filter in the "Expenses: Fee-for-service" section of the "All" filters tab.
Organizations spent over $25 billion on information technology, including both products and services, this past year. You can access this information with the Information tech. filter in the "Expenses: Fee-for-service" section of the "All" filters tab.
Organizations spent $5.8 billion to investment managers to manage endowments and other investable assets. You can access this information in the Investment mgmt fees filter in the "Expenses: Fee-for-service" section of the "All" filters tab.
Organizations spent over $12 billion on advertising, marketing, and promotions this past year. You can access this information with the Advertising and promotion filter in the "Expenses: Fee-for-service section" of the "All" filters tab. This field is slightly different than the other fee-for-service fields, in that it includes general spend on advertising (e.g., sponsoring a conference) in addition to spend on marketing firms.
Organizations spent over $1 billion on professional fundraisers this past year, seeking outside help to assist in raising money for program operations. You can access this information with the Pro. fundraising fees filter in the "Expenses: Fee-for-service" section of the "All" filters tab.
Organizations spent over $6.3 billion on law firms and other legal services this past year. You can search for organizations that spend money on legal services by using the Legal fees filter in the "Expenses: Fee-for-service" section of the "All" filters tab.
