Weeding out organizations that don't matter

Many organizations don't buy software or services, or otherwise aren't in your addressable market. Exclude them from your search results

Over 1.9 million nonprofit organizations exist in the United States, and narrowing down to the ones that are in your addressable market can be tricky. There are lots of false positives out there, including organizations that have small budgets, no staff, no investible assets, and other similar characteristics that rule them out at as a prospect for your business. Here are some tips on weeding out these organizations.

Eliminate organizations with small operating budgets

You want to target organizations that are large enough to actually procure your products or services. The two best ways to do this are with Total revenues and Operating budget filters. We recommend putting a minimum value of $1,000,000 for either of these fields.

You can access the Total revenues filter directly from your Search filter sidebar or in the "Revenue: General" section of the Advance search module. You can access the Operating budget filter in the "KPIs and financial metrics" section of the Advance search module.

Eliminate organizations with no employees

Organizations with no employees are often shell organizations or are closely related to other organizations. As such, procurement decisions often are not made by these organizations. To eliminate these organizations, add a filter for organizations having one or more employees. You can access this field with the Num. employees filter in the "Staff and board characteristics" section of the Advanced search module.

Eliminate organizations with no investible assets

If you are a financial advisor or commercial bank that cares about investible assets, you should eliminate organizations that have little to no investible assets. The best Cause IQ filter for investible assets is All cash, savings, and investments, which is an aggregate metric that combines cash, short-term savings, investments, publicly-traded securities, and other fields on investible assets. You can access the All cash, savings, and investments filter in the "Assets: General section" section of the Advanced search module.
