The fastest growing nonprofits in the United States tend to be younger organizations that have just received major funding (e.g., Obama Foundation). Almost a third of these fastest growing nonprofits, though, are organizations more than ten years old that have either seen slow growth until now (e.g., Washington STEM), or that used to be larger, fell on hard times, and are now recovering with gusto (e.g., Technology Entrepreneur Center). Besides these trends, the fast-growing organizations are diverse in geography, issue area, and organization type. Some are community development organizations that have received funding for major programs. Others are senior-citizen focused retirement and health care human service organizations. Geography-wise, Texas punches above its weight with 18% of the fastest-growing nonprofits, even though it only has 6% of nonprofits overall

Cause IQ digitizes and cleans electronic and paper / scanned Form 990s for over 400,000 IRS-registered tax-exempt organizations. We narrowed these to the fastest-growing nonprofits by narrowing down to 501(c)(3) and 501(c)(6) organizations with at least $1M in revenue, at least $10 employees, and that had Form 990 data for the fiscal year end of 2017-12 or newer. To find organizations with an actual trend versus a one-year blip, we required at least three years worth of financials, with two consecutive most recent years of revenue growth.
