Program areas at 826la
Tutoring:during the school year we offer free tutoring programs and a space where students in grades 2nd to 12th can connect with one another and develop their social emotional skills while working on their writing skills by participating in a writing project that is published in books we produce throughout the school year. We served 113 students in our tutoring programs. Every day our students gather into our writing labs at both 826la in mar vista and 826la in echo park to work through their homework, connect with one another through various fun group activities and work on their budding creative skills by tackling a writing project designed by staff. These works are refined, collected, and published in chapbooks we produce two times a year, which are celebrated with release parties. The process of writing and publishing is an important aspect of our program, and an opportunity for students to bring their imagination to life.
Field trips:826la invites classes to participate in free, writing-based, in-person field trips. Over 1,136 students have participated in our field trips. Our field trips offer a fun, safe, collaborative experience for students to express their imaginations and practice their writing skills. Supported by our volunteers, students brainstorm and write original stories, memoir pieces, or college essays. After the field trip, students will receive their writing in the form of a bound book or published on an online platform. In-person field trips take place at our writing labs in mar vista and echo park. We also offer traveling field trips where we take our field trip curriculum into schools.
In-schools and writers room:826la writers' rooms are on-campus spaces dedicated to celebrating and honing students' writing and literacy skills. Brightly decorated, with comfortable seating and framed student work on the walls, they're classroom-sized versions of 826la. Students get help with personal statements for college, work on writing assignments, or just hang out. 826la staff collaborates with teachers to develop engaging projects, and trained volunteers work with students one-on-one, reducing student-to-teacher ratios.in 2013, we opened our very first writers' room at manual arts senior high school, located in south central la. We celebrated the opening of our second writers' room in 2019 at roosevelt high school in boyle heights. A third writers' room is in the works!we have served 3,530 students in our in-schools and writers room programs.
Workshops:through our workshops program, 826la builds community amongst our students, volunteers, and other stakeholders by exploring new and creative ways to use the written word to help discover themselves and tell their stories, while also honing their writing and critical thinking skills. We have 112 students in our workshops. For over 10 years, 826la has partnered with the hammer museum to bring our unique brand of programming to students in westwood and its surrounding communities. One sunday morning a month, 826la hosts a workshop at the hammer museum, inviting our teaching artist partners to lead 2-hour workshops in which students engage with new kinds of writing or with writing in new ways, and leave with a written creation they can be proud of.
