Education & conservation - club members serve as 'trailhead stewards' who help to inform and educate hikers on conservation and safe hiking practices. The club also provides significant grants to external organizations, primarily the Adirondack mountain club, to conduct education and conservation work in the new york state forest preserve. This support includes funding for the summit steward program where stewards are present on mountain peaks helping educate hikers on protection and conservation of the sensitive mountain environment. We also provide grants for trail clearing, trail building, and other projects by a professional trail crew. Members pick up trash on ny rt 73 several times a year under a dept. Of transportation adopt-a-highway program. We also offer an "outdoor skills workshop" open to the public.
Peeks magazine the club publishes "peeks magazine" twice a year. A volunteer editor develops the magazine containing club news and events, articles on hiking and environmental conservation, and other outdoor topics. Members are recognized for their hours of conservation service. The club does not accept advertising. Non-members may purchase the magazine by subscription
Trail and lean-to work - under supervision of our volunteer trailmasters, we conduct various work projects approved by the new york department of environmental conservation. Members and non-members conduct a variety of projects such as trail clearing, trail improvement, building bridges, building/moving lean-to's and other conservation activities. Volunteer work is encouraged and recognized by awards/patches based on the number of service hours performed. Building materials were purchased which were used to repair and build new lean-to shelters on state land.
The organization is a membership organization designed to promote hiking within the adirondacks. This includes support of other organizations with similar missions.
