Program areas at Advocates for Homeless and Those in Need
Those in Need - this mission processes daily calls from people in Need asking for a wide variety of help. These calls are sometimes from caseworkers from bucks agencies that have a client needing a "hands up" to get back on their feet. Many times, it is one of our local church offices or the pastors who have given our number to someone. They Need a bit of hope knowing someone will give them another chance or care enough to let them try. The largest emergency service is providing emergency shelter at a local motel in bristol for individuals, couples or families with children who are experiencing a housing crisis. Ahtn also funds gas assistance; small car repairs; utilities; ids and documents. We also provide transportation to mental health appointments; grocery stores; laundromat; drug court & mental health court. Last fiscal year we served 1338 single individuals, 511 families with total 2423 family members served.
Transportation - one major mission is our wheels to meals. Ahtn partners with 35 houses of worship as part of our free shared meals program. Ahtn volunteers use our vehicles to pick-up our Homeless friends and bring them to houses of worship so the Homeless and Those in Need can enjoy a hot meal with others in the community every night of the month. During the pandemic, all of the houses of worship shut their doors, but our administrative consultant worked with all of the houses of worship to see if they would make "to go" meals. They all agreed. We are running a hybrid program now. There are 14 houses of worship that offer a sit-down community meal so our volunteers transport our friends to and from the meal. The rest of the month, our volunteers pick up 50 "to go" meals and deliver them out to our friends at our various bus stops. They are able to get a meal every night of the year. We no longer have a shower mission because bucks county opportunity council opened up their showers to our Homeless friends.
Code blue winter shelter - this mission provides transportation to and from the winter shelter; a cot, bedding; thermal tops & bottoms; sweatpants & sweatshirts; gloves; socks; hats; a coat; boots and a nutritious meal for the night when weather conditions are such that they are dangerous to unsheltered individuals. Last code blue season (dec. 2022 - march 2023) we were open 45 nights; served 108 unduplicated individuals and 742 "heads in beds" which are duplicated guests. This code blue season (dec 2023-march 2024) we have been open 50 nights; served over 150 individuals with over 1700 "heads in beds".
