Afhho's advocacy program covered a range of advocacy work to advance the social determinants of Health of African immigrants and refugees communities. The call to actions are developed through the wisdom of community members, advocacy committees and partners organizations who center black, indigenous, and communities of color voices. Under the advocacy program, we created and provided space for up to 100 community members to uplift community wisdom by sharing stories and strategies, captured via creative video content to raise awareness around safe sleep practices for more than 50 African immigrants and refugees families locally andinternationally.we also participated with other cbos and community partners in around 60 sessions to deepen racial equity analysis and center community in Health equity policy and planning, developed tools to disrupt oppressive systems and remove barriers that make food, place and economic opportunities inaccessible to African immigrant andrefugees communities' members.
Afhho's community Health workers (chw) program is the foundational program of afhho since our community Health workers have strong relationships in the communities where they work. They are able to advocate in effective and significant ways to care providers because of their increased trust and connection to community members who may not feel comfortable engaging with mainstream Health and government service systems. Under the maternal Health watoto wetu project, we conducted outreach and educated up to 200 families, referred about 200 households to resources in the community or through established net programs, assisted in a total of 84 births, provided child care classes to about 200 families, hosted 5 baby shower events, and advocated for 100 individuals in healthcare and work settings.
