Research program:this program involves generation of scientific knowledge that is aligned to local and international agendas that affect Health and development in africa. For the past four years. Aphrc has generally recorded an upward trajectory on the total number of Research products published. With 2023 recording the highest at 310 during this reporting period. Published papers (38%). Technical reports (22%). Blogs (20%). And policy briefs (15%) were the most-produced Research products. While factsheets and book chapters were the least . At 1% and 4%. As of the end of 2023. Aphrc publications had been cited a total of 46,905 times. Of the 17 un sustainable development goals (sdgs). The Center's published articles tackled 15 (88%) of them. Good Health and wellbeing (sdg 3) and nopoverty (sdg1) were the most addressed.
Policy engagement and communications: aphrc was able use Research evidence and engage policy actors and practitioners for transformative change. In 2023, aphrc conducted 175 policy engagements across various themes. The Center, working closely with other partners including the ministry of Health, food environment policy action, the county government, local universities, community based organizations & government agencies recorded 16 policy wins in 2023. These wins remain potential in nature continues being assesssed & being documented.
The Research & related capacity strengthening (rrcs) program is working to increase the number of Research leaders in the region and improve institutional capacity for Research across academia through its flagship doctoral training program: the consortium for advanced Research training in africa (carta). Achievements include: in 2023. 19 carta fellows graduated with doctoral degrees. Bringing the total number of graduates to 160 out of 245 fellows supported so far. Until 2023. The fellows had published 3.088 papers in peer-reviewed journals. Helping to ensure that African Research reaches a global audience. In addition to the grants they receive from carta the fellows secured external grants worth $2.8m. Bringing the total grants raised by them to $32m. This could be partly attributed to the grant writing skills they receive from carta. Aphrc conducted shortcourse training workshops for a broader audience of academic. Advocacy & other research-interested institutions. They include courses on grant proposal writing. Scientific writing and publishing, Research methodology, implementation Research etc.the Center made efforts towards facilitating the adoption and institutionalizing of the good financial grant practice (gfgp) certification in African institutions to enhance financial and grant practices across the region. In 2023, 67 African institutions went through the gfgp assessment process. These were 46 institutions under the catalyze project, 12 institutions under the jpiamr project, and nine from the carta program.
