Program areas at Afrithrive

HEALTHY FOOD/EQUITY INITIATIVE: AfriThrive runs a mobile food pantry program that receives, packages, and distributes culturally appropriate healthy foods to families that need it most. Our food pantry is sustained through strategic partnerships. AfriThrive pivoted and expanded its service coverage reaching approximately 9,000 vulnerable community members at risk of hunger. Reached 1 million pounds of food milestone since the start of food operations.Forty (40) families participated in nutrition education to learn about making better food choices for their families. We received a recognition certificate from the office of Montgomery County Executive for exemplary service to residents during the Covid-19 pandemic. Established 5 new strategic partnerships in the community to support our programs.
Youth Development Program: Youth Development Program supports vulnerable black immigrant/refugee youths (14-26). We focus on education, job skills, financial literacy, and mentorship, aiming to break intergenerational poverty and enhance integration. We hosted a graduation gala on June 18, 2022, attended by 120 community members to celebrate the achievements of 10 program youths who transitioned to college.
Urban Farm & Community Gardening: AfriThrive reconnects African immigrant/refugee communities with their culture via urban farming in Montgomery County. Our 2-acre farm grows culturally relevant foods sustainably. We assist vulnerable families in accessing garden spaces to grow crops, learn gardening skills, and offer nutrition education. Engaged 25 families in a community gardening program and 100% committed to the gardening project for the next season. The cultural farm and community gardens cumulatively produced averagely about 10,000 pounds of indigenous African vegetables for distribution.
