Program areas at AHSF
Access to quality care: Alameda Health System Foundation (ahsf) receives temporarily restricted donations and grants for priority programs and equipment/capital needs of ahs. These include single- and multi-year grants/pledges from funders/individuals. Ahs serves more than 150,000 patients/year. Most are low-income and are covered by medi-cal or are uninsured. Overall ahs's patients tend to be sicker and have lower life expectancy than the general population. Ahsf raises funds to invest in essential modern equipment and facility upgrades, and to support needed program enhancements/expansion. The top funding priority in the report period was improving access to quality care to address the Health disparities and inequities experienced by ahs's patients. Programs funded included those that support prevention, screening, treatment, and management of patients who had complex, chronic conditions; palliative care; perinatal care; and early childhood development.
Workforce development: the third largest funding priority during the report period was for ahs's career and workforce development initiative, healthpath, which provides work-based learning experiences and skills building for youth and young adults from under-resourced communities served by ahs. Healthpath prepares youth and young adults for careers in the broad array of in-demand health-related jobs; supports them in achieving academic and career success; and connects them with job opportunities within ahs and other Health care organizations, thus contributing to improving the economic Health of the communities ahs serves. Funding also supported development of the community Health worker (chw) workforce.
Health equity: ahsf raises funds to address a range of needs beyond those related to direct medical care to achieve Health equity for ahs's patients. Many of ahs's patients have basic financial needs that pose barriers to seeking needed Health care services and good Health. These needs include access to good nutrition/healthy food, transportation to/from medical and other appointments, safe and affordable housing, etc. Funds were also raised to support ahs's patients, including those experiencing cancer, in navigating the complex array of social services that are needed to enable them to overcome inequities and have improved Health outcomes.
