Program areas at Alaska Innocence Project

Work on a program funded by a Department of Justice grant to identify wrongful convictions that occurred in rural Alaska, especially among Alaska Native individuals. The work involved investigating claims of innocence which have already been identified and seeking additional potential claims through contact with Alaska Native organizations.
Work to review claims of innocence received from incarcerated individuals. These consisted of new requests from such individuals and a continuation of investigating previously received claims of innocence.
Prepare for and begin a post-conviction hearing in a case involving a claim of actual innocence. The preparation involved extensive investigative activities as well as extensive research into the medical basis, or lack thereof, that underlay our client's conviction. The hearing stated in, and continued through May, and June. The hearing was still ongoing as July started.
