Program areas at Alexandria Area Young Men's Christian Association

Healthy Living/ Memberships:Our YMCA is dedicated to fostering holistic wellness for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. We offer a variety of wellness programs aimed at reducing the risk of chronic diseases and providing support for individuals to achieve and maintain positive health outcomes. As our community grapples with challenges such as obesity, mental health issues, and chronic diseases, and families seek balance in their work-life routines, our facility remains accessible, affordable, and inclusive to all members, regardless of faith, background, ability, or income level.Last year, our Enhance Fitness program supported 191 older adults in leading more active and independent lives through evidence-based group exercise and falls prevention initiatives. Additionally, in response to the prevalence of high blood pressure as a modifiable risk factor for heart disease and stroke, we introduced the YMCA's Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring program. This initiative assists adults with hypertension in effectively managing their blood pressure. Moreover, we collaborated with Alomere Health and Horizon Public Health to launch the JumpStart program. This partnership aims to encourage community members to engage in YMCA programs or services that promote holistic health and wellness. In 2023, over 6,688 members found community and belonging through our YMCA experience, with over 2,400 members aged 65 and above. Our facility offers a range of amenities, including pools, fitness equipment, group fitness spaces, and recreational courts, providing opportunities for individuals to engage in various physical activities conducive to their wellness journey.
Social Responsibility:The YMCA is committed to fostering inclusive communities where everyone can thrive. Through initiatives like our Annual "Strong Kids" Campaign, we support our neighbors in need, enabling them to fully participate in our community. In 2023, the Alexandria Area YMCA provided over $37,440 in financial assistance to 408 individuals. Additionally, 176 people received essential life-saving skills, including First Aid, CPR, and AED training, empowering them to respond effectively to emergencies both within the YMCA and throughout the broader community.
Youth Development/ Child Care/ Youth Programs:Our YMCA is dedicated to nurturing the potential of every child and teen, ensuring they have the opportunity to explore their abilities and reach their full potential. From infancy through adolescence, children engage in a variety of enriching programs such as swim lessons, day camp, youth sports, and child care, fostering friendships and life skills development. In 2023, our child care services supported 319 children, while 993 children benefitted from swim lessons and youth programs, promoting healthy living and skill acquisition. Our child care staff are trained to understand children's cognitive, physical, and social development, providing a supportive environment where kids feel connected and families are reinforced. Participation in YMCA youth development programs equips children with essential life lessons and skills transferable to various aspects of their lives, including the classroom and beyond
