Programming and production:all Classical radio (acr) is a rare non-commercial, not-for-profit, independent, Classical music and arts and culture formatted radio station originating from kqac 89.9 in portland, Oregon with repeater stations broadcasting from the columbia gorge to the Oregon coast, and streaming worldwide at allclassical.org 24 hours a day. All Classical radio broadcasts locally and nationally syndicated Classical music programming to as many as 250,000+ weekly regional fm listeners alone (source: nielsen audio), and approximately 10,000+ listeners access our online stream each month, representing 50 states in the usa and over 100 countries. All Classical radio provides daily programming that is 98% locally produced, curated for the community, and available to the world. Programs demonstrate the stations mission to build cultural community, including performances featuring primarily local musicians on thursdays @ three and weekly broadcasts of concerts previously recorded in Oregon and sw Washington on played in Oregon. All Classical radio airs six+ annual broadcasts of Oregon symphony performances, programs containing historical and contextual information about compositions and composers, and news about local arts organizations. In fy 2023, All Classical radio continued its acclaimed 7-part performance series called fall into the arts which featured more than forty regional artists and organizations. On-going specialty programs include on deck with young musicians featuring youth regional musicians, club mod focusing on the music of living composers, and sunday brunch: exploring cultures through delicious music. In addition, All Classical radio produces a weekly arts round-up segment called northwest previews and nationally syndicates the score, a radio show about film music. In fy2023, All Classical radio created a new program called notebook, which host lynnsay maynard describes as a library card and a jukebox All in one. This program is designed to welcome new audiences and encourage the community to read, discover music and literature, and explore social and cultural themes.in april 2019, All Classical radio launched a new radio channel for children, the international childrens arts network (ican). Ican broadcasts 24 hours a day with content created specifically for young people and those who care for and educate them. Ican continues to grow in listenership, with website visits and streaming listenership increasing steadily year over year and is used by parents and teachers to supplement at-home learning opportunities.the international childrens arts network (ican) is a commercial-free network available on All Classical radios hd-2 channels, online at icanradio.org and via the free mobile All Classical radio app. It is designed to educate, stimulate creativity and playfulness, encourage healthy development, awaken the imagination, promote emotional and social literacy, and foster cross-cultural awareness. Icans musical programming takes an inclusive approach to the Classical canon to highlight traditions from around the globe, providing children with an entry point to learning about world cultures and traditions through music and literature. Daily programming consists of storytelling and poetry shared with music, imagined adventures in childrens own voices, and a bedtime hour featuring lullabies from around the globe. In fy2023, ican remained an unmatched resource for 20,000+ educators, guardians, and families. Its audio book tour provides safe, age-appropriate, and socially responsible stories; since its launch, the audio book tour has featured over 50 books addressing topics such as bullying, race, and belonging.all Classical radios recording inclusivity initiative (rii) saw the creation of brand-new partnerships with local and national organizations, working with the station to lead change in the industry by advancing equitable representation on the airwaves. Historically marginalized communities, including composers of color, black artists, and women artists, have long been suppressed by the Classical music industry, and high-quality recordings of their music are severely limited. Recognizing that we cannot play and represent the music of these artists if the recordings dont exist, All Classical radio has committed to creating the recordings ourselves and working with our peers to expand the initiative nationwide. All Classical radio has distributed multiple recordings internationally to date through its partnership with navona record label.riis fy2021 launch resulted in the naming of three composers in residence: jasmine barnes, lauren mccall, and keyla orozco. These composers joined local musicians for in-studio recording sessions in summer 2021. In fy2022, All Classical radio received the coveted national local that works Media award in recognition of rii. In fy2023. All Classical radio continued to offer support and free resources to over 50 Classical music radio stations nationwide via the online rii how-to kit, helping them build their own recording initiatives. Multiple radio stations successfully diversified recordings and performances using the rii how-to kit, including wipr in san juan, puerto rico - allegro 91.3 fm and wdav in davidson, nc. Additionally, All Classical radio continued developing the rii database, a free online repository for recordings made as part of rii (released in fy2024).
Marketing and community engagement:the station engages over 10,000 people weekly via social Media and over 35,000 people in a bi-weekly e-newsletter. The website provides an up-to-the-minute resource about programming and highlights educational information. There is also a free online cultural events calendar highlighting key cultural partnership events sponsored and supported by the station. The website offers archived programs on-demand.all Classical radio engages and uplifts youth in the community through youth roving reporters (yrr), an arts journalism training and mentorship program. Through the yrr educational program, All Classical radio and ican on air hosts mentor students, providing them with guidance and insight on what it is to be a broadcaster and how to tell the stories of their communities effectively, authentically, and creatively. Other station initiatives include:artist in residence (air) program started in 2019. Air is designed to foster creative and professional growth for young, emerging, and established performing artists. Residents have access to All Classical radios world-class facilities and studios. They are offered on-air and performance opportunities, including appearances on radio programs, at station events and concerts, and on special broadcasts. Residents are encouraged to pursue artistic research projects and to publish related articles about their work and findings through All Classical radios wide-reaching platforms. Residents receive a scholarship award to assist in their creative projects, performances, and/or continued studies. The residency encourages artists to pursue new projects and ideas, take creative risks, and equitably supports local performers and composers. In 2021, All Classical radio added three residencies for composers, and in 2022, the program was expanded to include a new role for young artist ambassadors. The 2023 artist in residence was pianist maria garcia, and the young artist in residence was amir avsker. Three young artist ambassadors were also selected.recording inclusivity initiative (rii): the second album of the initiative was recorded in 2023 and is scheduled for release in may 2024.artist anthology is a groundbreaking collection of forty digital profiles of the pacific northwests trailblazing contemporary artists the culture bearers of this regions thriving arts community. Through this initiative, supported in part by a grant from the nea, All Classical aims to document and promote the artistic moment by amplifying regional contemporary artists, with profiles penned by notable northwest writers and portraits by prominent local photographers. Each featured artist represents a unique medium and perspective, and the entire digital collection will culminate in a limited-edition book to be published and released in summer 2024.the station maintains an active volunteer and intern program. These programs bolster the organizations engagement with the community and provide training in Public broadcasting. Nearly 80 volunteers represent the station.
Platforms/increased capacity: All Classical radio successfully increased listenership and digital streaming. In fy2023, there was a notable increase in listeners accessing our on-demand programs; the audio archive page of our website had a 78% increase in visits yoy. Online streaming data indicates steadily increasing listenership for acrs second network, ican. Quantitative data for ican is based on online streaming metrics, showing that online listenership has grown significantly since the networks launch. Ican has seen a continued increase in web streams and a 44% increase in overall visits yoy to icanradio.org. In fy2023, ican radios social Media followership was up 241% from the previous year, reflecting the enhanced engagement with audiences.
