Our current work focuses on improving biosecurity and reducing the risks from biological threats. In 2021, we ran a data science competition aimed at enhancing the accuracy of tools that could be used to trace genetically engineered organisms back to their lab-of-origin, to improve accountability and transparency. This competition led to significant improvements in state- of-the-art tools, and has been summarized in a manuscript recently accepted for publication in nature communications. We separately published the results of investigations carried out internally on genetic engineering attribution, and we coordinated qualitative research into the landscape of technologies that could help protect against biological threats.
