American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio

The aclu of Ohio undertakes outreach efforts to organize, activate and empower citizens to advocate for policies and legislation that advance social and racial justice and impact their rights. Strategic tools include one-on-one and group meetings, formation of action teams, workshops, legislative analysis, providing testimony before the Ohio legislature, emails, texting, social and traditional media, briefing papers, and website updates. Issues addressed include ending racial disparities in the criminal legal system, expansion of ballot access, and lgbtq+ rights.

As part of its commitment to ensuring that all people have autonomy over their bodies, the aclu of Ohio engaged in a successful ballot initiative to enshrine abortion rights in the Ohio constitution. The measure passed in november 2023.

The organization fought an attempt by Ohio legislators to require a supermajority of 60% for passage of ballot initiatives. It was successfully defeated in august 2023, preserving simple majority rule in such campaigns.
