Program areas at George P Vanderveer
As a post, we have over 1,700 legionnaires, 300+ sons of the legion, 300+ legion auxiliary, and 80+ legion riders, making us the largest american legion post in the state of new jersey. Other programs/events we operate are: run for the fallen, vietnamn museum and gold star family memorial, grace alexander memorial garden, purple heart memorial, "sos" survivor outreach services mdl, ocean county military support commission, tending kettles for salvation army, war dog memorial, funeral escorts, mission of honor, watch fires ceremony, vet works, at-home caregivers for veterans, hiring our heroes job fair, veterans town hall meeting, boots to reboots, vet haven north and south, "cota" children's organ transplant assn, legion baseball, vets in distress/temp. Financial aid, emergency family aid for families of deployed service men and women, people's food pantry donating approximately 400 lbs of food per month, and we serve as a community beacon for other local non-profits including, big brothers big sisters, easter seals, ocean county health coalition, greater tom's river chamber of commerce, toms river north high school, toms river historical society, lakehurst historical society, and toms river veteran commission. We estimate that our membership donates over 300 hours per week, or 15,000 hours per year to veterans organizations and other local charitable organizations. Major legion programs - girl and boy scouts support, boys state, veterans hospitals, promote 100% americanism, children and youth programs, memorial day, vest a cop, childrens' christmas party, and numerous other programs
Community food bank, community garden and gifts in kind collected at the post and distributed to veterans in need or other bona-fide charaties in the community.
