Program areas at American Musicological Society
The American Musicological Society, Inc. (AMS or the Organization) is a membership-based organization founded in 1934 to advance research and teaching in the various fields of music as a branch of learning and scholarship. About 3,000 individuals and 700 library subscribers from over forty nations participate in the Society.The primary program activities of the society are: the publication of its Journal publications grantmaking (support for published musicological research) an annual meeting where music research is presented and discussed fellowships for graduate study in musicology evaluation and presentation of awards for outstanding publications travel and research grants for all aspects of musicology support for public lecture series on musicological topics for a wider publicThe programs are supported and managed by the board of directors, the governing body with wide representation (AMS Council), and paid administrative staff. Financial support for activities is provided through the Society's host institution, New York University. The National Endowment for the Humanities and the University of Michigan also support the Society's effort to publish a series of critical editions focused on American music and titled Music of in the United States of America (MUSA). Over three hundred members of the Society serve voluntarily on committees and boards to assist in accomplishing its goals. In the fiscal year ended June 30, 2023, the following programs/publications were new or revised.a.Many Musics of America (event series): The Many Musics of America Project is a landmark event series organized by the American Musicological Society to spotlight the richness and diversity of Americas musical traditions as the country approaches its 250th anniversary. Partially funded by a grant from the National Writing Project, the Many Musics of America Project is anchored and co-organized by volunteers from the American Musicological Societys network of fifteen regional chapters. The series includes a mix of online and in-person events organized by music studies experts for music enthusiasts and a wider public interested in the history, richness and diversity of Americas musical traditions. All events are free or low-cost and will be accompanied by articles illuminating the development and unique features of the music explored. Most events will be recorded and made available for later viewing online.b.Music Means (publication): Music Means explores the complex artistic, social, commercial, political, and material histories of American music. Launched as part of the Many Musics of America project, a special event series organized by the American Musicological Society, Music Means publishes original narrative and commentary, alongside multimedia features, educational resources, and more. It provides a wealth of information to help users understand how different forms of music simple and multi-layered, harmonious and dissonant, traditional and innovative are woven into the story of America and its peoples.c.Meeting & Events Bulletin (publication): The AMS publishes Meeting & Events Bulletin, evolved from the Annual Meeting Bulletin, provide regular updates on AMS meetings and event in the form of a regular e-newsletter. Published around the 15th of most months.
