Program areas at American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology

Asbmb publishes several scholarly journals, which effective january 1, 2021 became open access, freely available to the scientific community that includes scientists, students, and scholarly institutions. The journal of biological chemistry is published weekly, and includes over 30,000 pages per year of original research reports on Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. All scientific papers submitted for publication go through an extensive peer-review process involving some of the more than 700 members of the journal's editorial board.in addition, asbmb publishes a monthly member magazine, asbmb today. This magazine focuses on internal Society news, as well as public affairs and matters of broad interest to the membership, such as committee activities and educational initiatives.asbmb also holds an annual meeting, at which its members and other distinguished scientists present scholarly papers and discuss current research and issues in the field of Biochemistry and Molecular biology.asbmb makes a number of grants and awards to promising scientists in the Biochemistry field, including awards by merck, vallee and avanti.asbmb has a number of subcommittees through which a wide variety of activities are organized and conducted.the public affairs advisory committee is responsible for monitoring and commenting on legislative and regulatory issues of interest to the Society. The committee is also responsible for working with the news media to publicize the Society's views on issues of interest to the biochemical research community.the education and professional development committee focuses on education and professional development issues in general, as well as the particular problems faced by women and under-represented minorities in the biochemical field. The committee has published a careers brochure entitled unlocking life's secrets: career opportunities in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. This brochure is aimed at high school students and undergraduates who may be considering pursuing careers in Biochemistry or Molecular Biology. Additionally, the committee has prepared a recommended curriculum in Biochemistry for undergraduates, and has surveyed graduate schools and the biotechnology industry on what courses these institutions would like prospective students or employees to have taken.the maximizing access committee takes a strong interest in education matters as they pertain to african, hispanic, and native American students. Very few persons from these groups enter the fields.in addition to the above committee activities, asbmb is one of the founding organizations of minorities in sciences and technology (mist), a washington-based coalition of science organizations interested in increasing minority exposure to (and participation in) science. Mist serves as an information exchange and coordinating mechanism among the various scientific societies interested in minority science education, and sponsors an annual career fair in which asbmb participates.
