Program areas at ASN
Kidney Week - The Society's Annual Meeting (Kidney Week) includes educational sessions and research papers on recent discoveries and advances in nephrology. In addition to Kidney Week, the Society also offers other meetings (Highlights), provides an Annual Board Review Course and Update (BRCU), and offers other distance learning opportunities for nephrologists.
Public Policy and Public Affairs - Seeks to shape federal policies, increase federal policies, increase federal and institutional resources, and influence regulatory directives to help its members.
Publications - The Society publishes the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (JASN) (Impact Factor 13.6), the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology (CJASN) (Impact Factor 9.8), Kidney360 (Impact Factor 2.7) the Nephrology Self-Assessment Program (nephSAP), and ASN Kidney News. JASN, established in 1990, publishes peer-reviewed basic, clinical and translational original articles relevant to nephrology. CJASN, established in 2006, focuses on advancing the practice of kidney medicine by reporting novel and rigorously reviewed clinical research. Kidney360, launched in 2020, an online only Open Access journal that publishes basic, translational, clinical, epidemiologic, health policy, population science, and global health kidney research, nephSAP provides topic-focused updates on clinical and research advances in nephrology, as well as medical education (CME) credits and maintenance of certification (MOC) points for nephrologists. ASN Kidney News, a news magazine established in 2009, provides kidney professionals and others access to key information in nephrology.
Leadership - The council is the governing body of the society as such, the council supervises the affairs of the society, provides direction for the advancement of the society, and ensures that its goals, mission and purpose are accomplished in a timely manner and with the highest quality. The council sets dues for the members (other than emeritus and senior emeritus members, who are not required to pay dues) on an annual basis. The council has the power to retain an Executive Vice President to manage and direct all day to day activities of the Society in accordance with the policies adopted by the council and such other professional and administrative staff and legal counsel as it deems necessary to carry out the purposes of this society.
Kidney Health Intiative - To advance scientific understanding of the kidney health and patient safety implications of new and existing medical products and to foster development of therapies for diseases that affect the kidney by creating a collaborative environment in which FDA and the greater nephrology community can interact to optimize evaluation of drugs, devices, biologics, and food products.
Membership - ASN has more than 20,000 members from more than 132 countries. Approximately 60% of ASN members reside within the US. Most ASN members have earned either an MD (87%) or PhD (16%), or equivalent degrees. 9% of members hold both MD and PhD.
Other - Other program services to help accomplish the organization's tax exempt purpose.
