Program areas at News Leaders Association Foundation
Minority leadership institute: now called the emerging Leaders institute, this program nla promotes newsroom leadership by offering valuable training to editors, such as the emerging Leaders institute. The institute launched in 2012 with the goal of training minority journalists to become Leaders in their organizations and in the industry. The program is tailored to address the most pressing issues for Leaders and the skills needed to lead and drive change. Topics covered in each two-day institute include goal setting, finance, strategy, leadership style, driving diversity, technology and innovation. Nla has organized 17 institutes since 2012, training more than 300 News Leaders.
The nla awards honor the best in newsroom leadership, diversity leadership and protection of a free press in 11 categories. The prize money for each award comes from sponsorships by different News organizations and foundations.
The annual diversity survey of newsrooms was not conducted in 2022 in an effort to revamp the survey methods and get a higher participation rate. A roundtable was conducted in fall 2022 to get input from affiliate journalism groups (nabj, nahj, aaja, maynard, nlgja, google newsroom initiative and spj) before issuing a request for proposal to get bids from researchers to conduct the survey the following year.
The Foundation incurred expenses and made grants related to freedom of information initiatives and first amendment awareness and education.
