Public policy - Americas Society is committed to furthering education and debate on public policy issues in the hemisphere. This is accomplished through programs; conferences; meetings; working groups; reports; publications; research; and high-level meetings with policymakers, scholars, media, community groups, philanthropists, and business leaders. In 2023, Americas Society hosted in-person, hybrid, and virtual high-level programs with audiences across the united states and latin america to foster dialogue on regional issues.americas Society identifies emerging policy challenges and produces, publishes, and disseminates research and analysis as a basis for debate and dialogue with relevant policymakers, business leaders, community representatives, and the media. As the leading forum for hemisphere-wide debate, the Society's public policy programs engage opinion leaders from the public and private sectors in positive dialogue in the united states, canada, and throughout latin america and the caribbean to share ideas with organizations, businesses, and individuals and to formulate solutions to the challenges facing the Americas today.americas quarterly (aq) - is an award-winning publication dedicated to politics, business, and culture in the Americas. Borrowing elements from the economist and foreign affairs, but with a focus on latin america and the caribbean, aq reaches more than 1 million people per year through its digital platforms, magazine, and podcast. Its influential, agenda-setting audience includes ceos, senior government officials, and thought leaders. Founded in 2007 and based in new york city, aq is an editorially independent, not-for-profit publication of Americas society/council of the Americas, which for more than 50 years has been dedicated to dialogue in the western hemisphere.the aq podcast features weekly interviews on latin american politics and trends for a growing audience of over 10,000 listeners per month. Launched in march 2020, the aq podcast focuses on interviews with experts and policy makers from across the hemisphere.in 2023, aq delivered quality political analysis through its quarterly special reports, weekly online pieces, and by co-organizing two events with Americas society/council of the Americas. Over the course of the year, aq published four issues: the uruguay issue, what lula means for latin america, the cybersecurity issue, and a (relatively) bullish case for latin america.issued 1 delved into uruguay, latin america'Americas's strongest democracy, and how the nation offers many lessons for peers in the region, including the value of a robust social safety net. The country has the highest per capita income (about $17,000), its lowest poverty rate (7%), and among its lowest levels of inequality. Uruguay's energy matrix is the region's greenest. We hosted a podcast episode with uruguayan journalist martn aguirre, head of el pais, to discuss how uruguay got there, the limitations of this success and where the country is headed.issue 2 ran an enterprise story of brazil's outlook under the third term of then president-elect luiz inacio lula da silva. Our main premise was: what does lula's return really mean for latin america and questions like regional trade integration, the region's relationships with the united states and china, investment flows, and latin america'Americas's overall role in the world? We hosted a podcast episode with the author of the issue's cover story, getulio vargas foundation international relations professor oliver stuenkel, to discuss what to expect from lula's foreign policy.issue 3 was focused on cybersecurity in the region, taking the case of a recent attack on costa rica, a leading example of the risks and challenges for governments and countries in the region. Latin america is the least prepared region in the world for cyberattacks, according to the latest edition of the global cybersecurity index, compiled by the un's international telecommunication union. We hosted a podcast episode with randy pestana, associate director of the cyber policy program at the jack d. gordon institute for public policy at Florida international university. Pestana was also featured on an in-person panel in late july, along with louise marie hurel, a research fellow at the cyber programme of the royal united services institute, discussing the implications and trends on this topic.issue 4 offered "a relatively bullish case for latin america," explaining how after a "lost decade" that saw economies stagnate across latin america and the caribbean, a new optimism appeared to be taking hold in some areas. Foreign direct investment in lac soared by 55% in 2022 to $224 billion, its highest value on record, during a year when fdi flows globally shrank 12%, while in 2023, colombia, mexico, and brazil were the world's top-performing emerging markets currencies. In july of 2023, mexico passed china to become the united states' top trading partner for the first time in 20 years. We hosted an in-person event about the energy transition in the region to showcase the new trends and opportunities in this field, featuring scholars from columbia university's center on global energy policy. A recording of the event was also posted online. Event panelist and former colombia finance minister mauricio crdenas was featured on a podcast episode and discussed the potential for growth in the region.through its signature latin american cities conferences, the Society cohosted and continued to offer an unparalleled platform for public and private exchanges where top government officials, business leaders, and investors discussed some of the most pressing issues facing the region. Held in person, the conferences focused on chile, argentina, colombia, brazil, peru, and dominican republic. They featured keynote remarks and panel discussions on topics such as examining political and economic outlooks in the context of presidential elections and sustainability, creating opportunities for technological innovation, and boosting economic activity through sustainable foreign investment.prominent speakers at the conferences included ministers, governors, ambassadors, senior representatives from multilateral organizations, ceos, and leading entrepreneurs and innovators. Among the top officials featured at the 2023 latin american cities conferences were the dominican republic's president luis abinader; the dominican republic's vice president raquel pena; colombia's minister of finance and public credit ricardo bonilla; executive director of amcham colombia maria claudia lacouture; chile's minister of finance mario marcel; chile's minister of science, technology, knowledge and innovation aisen amelia etcheverry; ceo of prime energia chile jose arosa; ceo of falabella gaston botazzini; brazil's minister of justice and public security flavio dino; brazil's president of the senate rodrigo pacheco; u.s. Ambassador to brazil elizabeth f. bagley; argentina's former presidential candidate and current security minister patricia bullrich; argentina's former presidential candidate and former economy minister sergio massa; argentina's former presidential candidate and current president javier milei; peru's president dina boluarte; and peru's minister of foreign affairs javier gonzalez-olaechea.in conjunction with the public latin american cities conferences, the Society cohosted several invitation-only elite events to convene constituents with senior hemispheric officials and business leaders for intimate, off-the-record programs. These programs provide an ideal setting for as members and constituents to engage with invited guests on investment opportunities and critical hemispheric issues. As part of the presidents of the Americas series, the Society cohosted virtual programs for latin american heads of state for an opportunity to dialogue on their countries' investment opportunities and current economic and political environments.
