Investigations:the cornerstone of our organization is our investigative work, and in 2022, Animal Equality released 13 investigations - an extraordinary number that has had a ripple effect across the global factory farming industry. Animal Equality sent investigators into some of the most secretive facilities in the world, exposing the immense suffering and cruelty that is happening at slaughterhouses and on farms that raise animals for food. In 2022, Animal Equality presented an investigation documenting the killing of american horses in mexico for food. In india, we conducted an extensive investigation into 27 farms, six Animal markets, and two slaughterhouses documenting illegal and cruel practices from workers to cows within the indian dairy industry.
Legal advocacy:across the world, Animal Equality's legal advocacy teams are working with local, state, and national governments to strengthen current laws and pass new ones that will impact the lives of millions of animals. Animal Equality was able to expand Animal protections across the globe in 2022. Animal Equality's legal advocacy achievements include the state of hidalgo, mexico, approving an initiative to make hidalgo the first state in mexico to dedicate an entire chapter of the law to minimum Animal welfare standards. Thanks to Animal Equality's work, the scottish government introduced mandatory inspections in slaughterhouses, and the italian parliament banned the shredding of male chicks as a common practice within the egg industry.
Corporate outreach:in 2022, Animal Equality's corporate outreach team worked extensively, convincing 57 companies to adopt Animal protection policies to reduce the suffering of 122 million animals a year. Animal Equality also continued to build its extensive network of volunteers. Dedicated Animal advocates from across the globe. After months of campaigning, Animal Equality won one of its most important campaigns getting the largest food service company in the world, compass group, to commit to eliminating gestation crates for mother pigs in the us. After negotiations with Animal Equality, mantiqueira, south america's largest egg producer, became the first latin american company to commit to working towards eliminating the killing of baby chickens as part of a common practice within the egg industry.
