Program areas at Apollo Chamber Players
Presented approximately 95 concert events for string quartet with frequent guest instrumentalists and/or vocalists including self-produced season concerts and regional/touring/outreach performances. Our in-person audience was approximately 25,000 and virtual programs reached over a 100,000 viewers in houston and around the world. Notable houston area venues include holocaust museum houston, asia society Texas center, zilkha hall (hobby center for the performing arts), rice university, university of houston. Apollo also debuted at the john f. kennedy for the performing arts in Washington, d.c. In april 2023 and returned to nyc's carnegie hall (weill recital hall) in march 2023. Oberon's grove called this concert: "one of the finest Chamber music concerts in recent memory." A core aspect of Apollo's programming includes educational programs for students of all ages in houston and southeast Texas, as well as fundraising/awareness campaigns for local organizations. These include healthcare for the homeless-houston; high school for the performing and visual arts; ukrainian american club of houston; chinese community center, and refugee service organizations connect community and amaanah refugee services. Performing arts partners included local organizations houston Chamber choir, houston ebony opera guild, houston contemporary dance company, houston ballet and boston-based castle of our skins, which celebrates black artists through music.
Commissioned ten new music works and a fine art work from a diversity (in both gender and ethnicity) of locally- and internationally- recognized composers and artists. These artists include academy-award winning vietnamese performer-composer vanessa vo, composer eve beglarian, chinese-born composer wang jie, acclaimed armenian duduk performer arsen petrosyan, and iranian-born percussionist pejman hadadi. Touring performances and residencies at concordia university (fargo, nd) and in Colorado springs, co for epic Chamber music.
Released on grammy-winning label azica records, Apollo's latest release, moonstrike, included newly commissioned works by multiple grammy and pulitzer prize winning composer jennifer higdon, emmy-winning chickasaw composer jerod tate, and rome prize-winning composer pierre jalbert. The ensemble's catalog of records has been featured on hundreds of radio and media stations worldwide. The organization's award-winning documentary film, moonshot: the remarkable journey of Apollo Chamber Players, was picked up for distribution and is now available on amazon prime video and tubi. Apollo albums have been featured on sirius satellite radio and the bbc, with notable airplay on wqxr-nyc and wfmt-chicago, two of the nation's most listened-to classical music stations, reaching 30 million listeners per month. Media broadcast of live performances and world premieres on american public media's "performance today," reaching 300 public radio stations across the country and 14 million listeners each week. Fred child, host of performance today, led an artist q&a prior to our season opening concert at rice university in september 2022.
