Program areas at Arctic Research Consortium of the United States Incorporated
CORE SUPPORT: Core support included the technological and management infrastructure personnel computer services etc. that supports information and outreach networking and other communications tasks across the disciplinary organizational sector cultural and geographic boundaries of Arctic research. In addition ARCUS analyzed the patterns of participation in our activities to assess patterns and gaps of attendees within our projects.
US ARCTIC SCIENCE SUPPORT AND COORDINATION: As part of this category ARCUS led and managed the Sea Ice for Walrus Outlook program which combines expert Indigenous observations with National Weather Service forecasts on weather and sea-ice conditions. In addition ARCUS collaborated with the U.S. Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee IARPC to bring research community perspectives to their activities; managed programs for early career travel awards and an Indigenous Scholars program; managed several virtual activities to promote collaboration around Community and Citizen Science in the Far North; managed a community meeting room at the American Geophysical Union fall 2022 conference; and led other networking events including those to develop a shared research agenda between Alaska and Maine. ARCUS also coordinated the Sea Ice Prediction Network SIPN project to improve Arctic sea-ice forecasts using a multi-disciplinary approach.
OUTREACH AND INFORMATION: Key activities included the ArcticInfo email list with over 3,700 subscribers and a Polar Education email list a Calendar of Arctic Research Events the Witness the Arctic Newsletters with over 8,700 subscribers a research webinar series a Conducting Research with Northern Communities online resource,and managing a comprehensive public website. In addition ARCUS continued planning for an in-person event held October 2023 Beringia Days 2023: Building Bridges for Shared Conservation and Cultural Goals.
