Program areas at Arizona Historical Society
Education and Outreach Programs: The Arizona Historical Society AHS is the institutional sponsor and state coordinator for National History Day NHD in Arizona. NHD is a year-long program focused on historical research analysis and creative expression for 6th- to 12th-grade students. The experience culminates in a series of contests at the local and state levels and an annual national competition in the nation's capital in June. With NHD the students become the historians building their critical-thinking skills analytical abilities and confidence. NHD-AZ provides workshops teacher and judge training history education resources and project consultation from staff historians and librarians. Overall we serve thousands of students and currently have four regional contests and one state contest. There were 190 participants in the regional competitions of which 95 made it to the state competition. In addition to NHD our education team also works to develop Arizona history curriculum for social studies teachers in the state. During the pandemic the team produced virtual and digital history content for the public including over thirty virtual programs most of which were free to attend activities for kids in and out of the classroom available free on our website and historical content and images on our social media platforms. The Outreach programs serves 59 Certified Volunteers are scheduled by the location where their services are used. Each location tracks the total number of volunteers and their hours. Some of the services provided by volunteers include: National History Day judges board members and support organizations.
Publications Division: Published four quarterly issues approx. 1,700 copies each of the Journal of Arizona History as required by ARS 41-763. These four issues included fifteen original research articles all of which substantially add to our collective knowledge of Arizona history. They also include forty-two book reviews of important books on Arizona wester and U.S. history allowing our readership to be aware of relevant books of interest. All current issues of the Journal of Arizona History are now also available digitally on the website or Project MUSE which is a digital publishing arm of the Johns Hopkins University Press. In FY 2022 we had 7908 downloads of our articles and book reviews on this site. In addition all issues of the Journal of Arizona History after a four year lag are available on JSTOR an online journal database that is available throughout the United States and around the globe. The current issues of the Journal will be uploaded to JSTOR in four years and all past issues from 1960 - 2018 are available now. In calendar year 2022 we had 31465 downloads of our articles and book reviews on JSTOR.
Museums: The Arizona Historical Society owns and operates four museums in the state. Our two large museums in Tucson and Tempe feature large permanent exhibitions that give visitors a broad overview of the states history with some local objects and stories mixed in. These two museums each have two rotating galleries that typically feature a new exhibit each year. In Tucson our new temporary exhibits that opened last fiscal year included Barry Goldwater 2020 - end of FY Ready to Launch: Arizonas Place in Space 05 2021 - 11 2021 and Los Desconocidos: The Migrant Quilt Project 01 2022 - end of FY. In Tempe the featured temporary exhibits are Unframed: A Photo Journey through Hopi and Navajo Nations 1977-1978 and Still Marching: From Suffrage to MeToo 03 2020 - 01 2022 and COVID Quilts 02 2020 - end of FY. Our two historic site museums in Flagstaff and Yuma also featured exhibitions. Due to space restrictions both of those museums were closed during the last fiscal year but are opening in late summer and fall 2021. Typically our museums host many school tours and public programs and as we recover from the pandemic we are adding more in-person events.
