Program areas at Arts for East
Etc: produced 14 productions this year which included the rehearsals and building of the sets, with 40 performances. Appoximately 300 students particpated in fall play, duet competition, spring musical, senior projects, level performances, and black box performances. A highlight is that we had 25 freshman in the spring musical. We also produced a unified production of high school musical two. We organized, recruited, and utilitized guest artists and coaches teaching new forms of the theatre such as movement based divised creation and chakra work. Students were accepted to amda, nyu and cu boulder.
Edc: the East dance department hired a new teacher this year. She hit the ground running and was able to keep the amazing department running smoothly. They produced 2 shows, both of which required rehearsals, choreography, costuming, fundraising, set and light design, animation, and music cutting. The fall performance contained over 15 student-created pieces, and the spring performance was the full-length dance production of alice in wonderland which contained 8 different scenes. Approximately 70 students participated in the fall show and 115 in the spring show. Dance also participated in a human movement choreography project. One student was accepted to nyu, one student received a full ride scholarship to metropolitan state university of Denver as a dance major, and a junior received a choreography award.
Ec: the East choir program includes 160 students and involves 7 different ensembles who were able to perform 7 large concerts and 3 smaller events last year. They also added a middle school recruitment tour and a performance for a nursing home. Their vocal jazz group, angelaires, competed at the chsaa state competition. The performances sold approximately 2,500 tickets. Multiple students are going on to major and minor in music in college. We also reinstated our voice lesson program which served 15 students during class time.
Cw: serendipity, the all-school publication of the creative writing dept, published its annual literary and Arts publication and held a successful release party at the tattered cover this year. In attendance were current students, future serendipity staffers, and alumni of the program from the 2-3 years ago. The program helped all
(cont) students in the course receive college credit through the community college of Denver for their work in the spring semester of the course. Angels on air produced its very successful 11th season. They also hired next years producers, who are excited and motivated to produce another season. The 35 students in angels on air
(cont) participated in the annual film festive at sie film center
Im: instrumental music involves 100 students and 10 different bands/groups (2 jazz ensembles, 3 concert bands, 1 jazz combo, 1 mariachi group, beginning band, begininng strings, and 2 guitar classes) at East. They had 10 concerts including playing at a local jazz club, dazzle. There were multiple side events throughout the year that the
(cont) students played as well. The orchestra supported the production of urinetown for the East theatre company which required several practice sessions outside of school hours as well as 4 productions. They also played in the Arts walk, started a drumline club and a norteno club.
Deft: the deft program started off the school year with a new teacher. He decided early on to drastically change the course of the department. He also decided that he did not want to be a part of afe. So, it was not until he was terminated in the fourth quarter that afe then stepped in to help facilitate some of the student participation
(cont) in the end of the year tournaments. Students were accepted to uc berkeley, ucla and yale. There were 150 students in the department
Afe: Arts for East provides strategic oversight, leadership accountability, fiscal management, and collaborative coaching for the teacher- directors who instruct and manage seven different performing Arts programs at East high school. Afe also serves these Arts programs at East through its 501(c)3 status by providing a repository and
(cont.) Distribution process for extracurricular funds for each program. Individual programs continue to assist high school students and parents with training, coaching and fundraising processes and efforts.
