Program areas at Asheville Greenworks
Through our Rivers & Roads program, 1,464 volunteers spent a total of 3,330 hours picking up 35,773 pounds of litter by hand from waterways and roadsides. Since 2017, the Trash Trout devices have captured 12,494 pounds. Held six successful Hard 2 Recycle events, with 3,141 Buncombe County residents bringing their hard-to-recycle items such as televisions, electronics, batteries, Styrofoam, hardcover books and more. In total, GreenWorks and its partners diverted 137,767 pounds of waste from the County landfill.
Five young people complete the GreenWorks Youth Enveronmental Leadership Program - a six-week paid internship for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) youth.
Installed, maintained, and expanded 2 tree nurseries to raise up to 4,000 trees to be used for tree giveaways and tree plantings on public property. Gave away more than 436 native trees to Buncombe County residents and planted 141 trees on public lands. Installed a native pollinator meadow in an Asheville public housing community. Engaged 732 volunteers for a total of 1,873 hours in urban forestry projects.
